Detective Tommy Breedlove
End of Watch September 4, 2021
Detective Tommy Breedlove died on September 4, 2021 as a result of complications from COVID he contracted through work. Detective Breedlove started working for the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office in 1998. He leaves behind his wife and seven children.
Deputy John Mecklenburg
End of Watch July 3, 2011
Deputy John Mecklenburg was killed in the line of duty early on the morning of July 3, 2011. Deputy Mecklenburg was attempting to apprehend a suspect who was actively placing innocent lives at risk. During the pursuit, Deputy Mecklenburg was involved in a very serious traffic crash on US 41, just south of County Line Road.
Captain Scott Bierwiler
End of Watch February 19, 2009
On the morning of February 19, 2009, Captain Scott Bierwiler was killed in a head on collision. Captain Bierwiler served with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office for 23 years and leaves behind a wife, three children, his mother, a sister and a brother.
Deputy Lonnie Coburn
End of Watch February 21, 1978
On February 21, 1978, Hernando County Sheriff's Office Unit 16 (Deputy Lonnie Coburn) was dispatched to a convenience store located at Highway 301 and State Road 50, reference suspicious persons. When he approached the two subjects, Deputy Coburn was overpowered and shot with his own weapon. More than 200 law enforcement officers from surrounding agencies immediately responded to assist in the search for the two suspects, who were subsequently apprehended and convicted.
